iPhone accelerates Mobile Web adoption, Mobile Ads still trailing
I ran across this blog entry from Jonathan and his observations of mobile web browsing. Using some educated estimates, Jonathan calculates that the average iPhone user sees something like 900 web pages per month and that those pages represent a huge marketing opportunity.
The iPhone has done a wonderful job of creating awareness of what is possible, but I must admit I really don’t find mobile banner advertising that compelling. Foremost, there is the limited screen space issue. Secondly there is the issue of having the necessary data points to create truly personal and relevant advertising. Mobile banner advertising CTR numbers appear all over the place and that is a sure sign of a state of flux.
There is a lot of experimenting going on in the mobile marketing space. At this point we don’t really know what works and what doesn’t. When new markets and technologies are brought to bare, business people start from the known and then move out from there. Mobile banner advertising has a long ways to go before we know just how effective of a delivery mechanism it truly is.
