iPhone Pwnage released

Users of the Apple iPhone should note today as a particularly important day in the history of their beloved device. It was today, Thursday, April 3, 2008, that the walls fell.

The iPhone Dev Team, a group of anonymous Cloak and Dagger-esque White Hatters, Pwned the iPhone. Their utility strips all vestiges of Apple’s walled garden, opening the device to the world (for good or bad). Now with the slightest of technical knowledge iPhoners can not just unlock their iPhones, but also place virtually any firmware on it.

While this provides little beyond simply allowing SIM unlocking at the moment, it’s only a short matter of time before homebrew firmwares start popping up. So the next time you see someone whip out an iPhone in a bar, it might be running some optimized version of Linux instead of the stock OS X.

This just reinforces the fact that walls always fall. People want to use their devices without restrictions, developers need to take note.
