Microsoft acquires MobiComp
Microsoft announced today that it is acquiring Mobicomp, a company with some interesting backup and restore technology as well as an active “ticker” feature. The timing is curious given Nokia’s recent Symbian announcement. Maybe Microsoft is feeling a little pressure?
To me, the bigger story with Mobicomp is the continued affirmation of mobile as a central hub for lifestyle. Mobile devices are a convenient place to aggregate, share, and receive real-time information. There is a large segment of society that doesn’t know what life was like before mobile devices and they are pushing the envelope further and faster every day. While we haven’t quite reached the tipping point yet, their demand for useful applications which interact with everyday life are changing the social and technological landscape.
