More on that iPhone SDK

There was a scoop this morning by iLounge about some potentially firm details from an anonymous source about the iPhone SDK and it’s not really the best news:

  • Apple will require that all SDK apps be distributed through iTunes. So this isn’t the biggest surprise, but it prevents developers from monetizing on their own terms.
  • All apps will be hand-picked by Apple, much the same as iPod games are now. Unfortunately, it won’t work like OS X widgets where anyone can make one available. This will arguably lead to a higher quality of apps, but it could reduce the number if niche applications.
  • Accessories will be inaccessible. App developers will not be able to make use of iPhone peripherals like Bluetooth headsets and the like. Sad.

There also seems to be some confirmation that a beta SDK will be made available at the conference next week and the official version will ship in June.We really would have preferred something more open.
